While not all four scripts are unqualified masterpieces, they each serve to push The X-Files further than it has gone before. Returning from Space: Above and Beyond, the two seemed to be bristling with an electric energy and a palpable frustration. Home is the first of their four scripts for the fourth season of The X-Files, and it sets the mood quite well. Morgan and Wong would produce four episodes of the fourth season of The X-Files and three episodes of the first season of Millennium. Fox had convinced Morgan and Wong to return to Ten Thirteen in return for producing a pilot for The Notorious Seven, one the duo’s long-gestating ideas. With the debut of Millennium looming, the production team on The X-Files was under pressure. IIRC 9/11 does get mentioned in season 10, but only after 15 years.Home also marks the return of writers Glen Morgan and James Wong to the series, following the cancellation of Space: Above and Beyond. Then, while writing season 9, 9/11 happened and its wave of conspiracies came out, and they had a debate about that, settling on not wanting to go there. It was very convoluted and got twisted so many times.Īs for real-life conspiracies: there's an interview/commentary on the DVD set where they talk about their willingness to touch contemporary real-life conspiracies in the show's universe, and how they were okay with it at first (with Gulf War Syndrome being a part of a 1993 episode, and obviously lots of stuff about historical conspiracies like JFK and Paperclip). I forget what the exact reason ended up being, I remember something about only vaccinating people who were also vaccinated against the alien virus and then using smallpox to wipe out humans before the alien virus could use them for something worse (hosts for black oil?), or something like that. Vaccines are half-conspiracies in the X-Files universe already, they do work to prevent disease but the smallpox vaccine program was initiated by the Syndicate for reasons. If they don't I'm not all that invested in whether they end it or not, much less how. If they still have ideas like that, I don't care if they replace Scully, I don't care if they replace Mulder. I'd honestly be happier if the show became something more akin to the twilight zone where Mulder was more of a framing device than a big story on his own. My favorite episode last season was the weremonster one. The truth completely changes the entire world and practically begs for a follow up that would probably be bad. Turncoats would require a compelling argument for changing sides which would very likely not satisfy the majority of viewers. Kill em all is clean but kind of pedestrian. I think there are about three rough shapes for possible endings: The truth seekers get killed, the truth seekers see the wisdom of hiding the truth and switch sides, or the government/shadow government (whatever it is) comes clean about all the truth that's out there.
